Entering the Metaverse
Gaming, concerts, 3D virtual shopping, advanced home office, training, and education. Can you imagine these three-dimensional experiences with just one tap on your smart device?
Forty years ago the novelist Neal Stephenson created the idea of a Metaverse in his sci-fi novel Snow Crash. In the book, the metaverse is referred to as an all-encompassing digital world that exists parallel to our real world. Since then, movies, video games, and now companies have tried to build their own metaverse. A virtual world where you can live, work, travel, and play.
Talking about the metaverse today still implies some speculations and expectations since it’s still under construction through blockchain, and virtual and augmented reality, and we haven’t yet seen its full potential. We could define it as a place parallel to our physical world where you can spend your digital life. A virtual reality where you can socialize and interact with other real people that will reshape economies, productivity, and social relationships. Somewhere, with some degree of verisimilitude, where you can experience unlimited virtual experiences and do the things humans do in real life.
As Web3 grows, anyone can own a multitude of digital assets thanks to blockchain and NFTs. Anything you can create, trade, buy, or sell can be owned through digital rights of ownership. In this sense, blockchain technology is part of the foundation of the metaverse.
Even though the metaverse as a concept is far more than just video games, the gaming industry rapidly adopted the idea. Decentraland and Sandbox are both metaverse worlds where you can buy land for business and build virtual buildings through blockchain technology. Unlike centralized games, these virtual lands can be traded in thrid-place marketplaces.
Meta, Microsoft, Google, Roblox, and even Nike are investing millions in the metaverse to expand industries’ possibilities in entertainment, finance, travel, fashion, education, and more through digital ecosystems, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs.
